A Year of Changes #family #life

by Lori on August 28, 2013

2013 has been a huge year of change for our family. HUGE.

Madison joined a select softball travel team. Christopher received his diagnosis of SPD and ADD. Jacob began speech therapy. My husband work has been steady and busier than we ever imagined.

We also decided to home school our children this year with the exception of Jake. He will still attend our church preschool for his final year.

Not as many family vacations were taken this year.

We decided to coordinate a special needs ministry within our church and lead this service.

Our kids favorite babysitter moved away to attend college which meant less date nights for mommy and daddy.

We really decided as a family it was time to really seek and listen to what God was calling each of us to do. While it is challenging at times, we know this is what is best for our family. Opening up our hearts and really hear the calling.

2013 is a wonderful year to reflect upon and plan for 2014.

Yes I am already talking about a new year. In case you are wondering there are only 4 months until then so it is really isn’t that far away.

A big decision or two has been made with our family.

The first being that we are in the process of prepping and selling our home so we can move to something bigger. Something that can hold the grandparents. Yes, my parents will be making the move to Houston soon and we need the room.

I am nervous and excited for this big change. The kids are really excited to have Nana and Papaw so close.

It is a dream come true for me to have my parents close so they can watch my children grow. I can not wait for them to be able to make the move!

Once we begin the process there will be several posts I am sure. I will post the good, the bad, and the ugly of updating and selling a home as well as our new home when the time comes.

The second big decision is new. Fresh on my mind and heart. My husband and I decided just this past weekend that our family is complete. Complete in the sense that there will be no more biological children joining our family. I always thought we would have one more but I really believe God has changed my heart on this for a reason. And the reason is the third big decision our family will be taking on as soon as we acquire our new home.

Adoption. That’s right. We have felt the calling to adopt a child in need. Not just any child however. We feel that God is calling us to adopt a special needs child. People will think we are crazy for adopting and even more so for a child that has a special need but we really feel like this is something God is putting in our hearts and is calling us to do.

I feel like why else would he put the desire in us so to create a special needs ministry in our church. To have this longing and desire to be with these children, if he was not preparing us for something greater?

While these events will not happen overnight, I felt the need to go ahead and write about them. So they are out there for the world to see and I can have accountability in a sense. I will not give up on these goals. They are dreams. They are what God has clearly set out for my family and I want to share it with you guys. I want you guys to see how sometimes God will send you a message and as scary as it is, you can let go. You can believe that what he has planned is greater than you ever imagined. Those dreams you have had set from the time you were a child are nothing compared to what God has in store for you.

I hope you guys will stick around and follow us along this journey! The next year or two are going to be a whirlwind and amazing!

If you have ever adopted, especially a special needs child, I would love to hear your story!

Lori you just made my eyes tear up. I can not imagine doing what you are doing! What a wonderful thing. I know first hand how hard it is to raise a child with special needs and to actively seek a child like that out speaks to just how wonderful you are. Thank you for looking out for children that are in serious need of love and understanding. Which ever child you end up adopting will certainly be joining a wonderful family!

What a wonderful time for your family. So many changes and some of them a bit overwhelming, yet I know that God will be with you in it all and will bless the choices you have made. I hope you find a house that you can be happy in and use for God’s glory when you move. That was my prayer when we bought our place here. It’s not going quite the way we expected, but I’m trusting that God has it all figured out and will keep me from borrowing worry about it and that we’ll let Him lead the way, and not try and ‘fix’ things ourselves.

Adopting is a wonderful blessing. Marie and I adopted Elijah here in Houston and Joshua in Russia. It is amazing the way God speaks specifically to those who are ready to listen. I’m excited for you to hear this calling to adopt a special needs baby so clearly. You are listening. Thanks for sharing your story here.

Great Blog! I just Found your site and I have been reading your post.

I have adopted 3 special needs kids through CPS. I have some great ups and downs. I am getting to know all of the school staff really well. I just like to celebrate the little achievements.
