I have been meaning to make a little bell for my back door for the dog to let me know she needs to go out. She is a good dog, most of the time. She is just super quiet. No barking or anything. So unless I am paying attention really well, she wont let me know when she needs to go out.
I did some shopping at local pet stores and online recently. I really liked this bell leash that hung on your door knob and the dog rang it with her nose or paw when she needed to go out. What I didn’t like? The $30+ price tag for this bad boy. I mean really? $30+ for something like that? No thank you.
I decided to bring out my inner craftiness and make one myself for much much less!
Supplies:
Bells- think of your Christmas Craft Supply stash. Super cheap even if you dont have them in your house right now.
Hot glue
Velcro pieces- again, in my craft closet, always have it on hand.
2 yards of ” tote bag handle” material. I have no idea what this is truly called. I got it at Hobby Lobby for 99 cents a yard. Any color you want.
Simple Steps:
Measure out how much of the handle material you need. I think I ended up using a yard and a half. Make a loop for your door, this is where it will hang from your door knob. Add the velcro where you need it. You want it tight on your door knob where it wont come off easily but yet, if you need or want to remove it you can.
Then glue on the bells!
That’s it. Really. Simple and best of all, much much much cheaper than the $30+ that you find them at the pet stores or online! This cost me around $5! I already had the bells, the hot glue, and the Velcro on hand so it was a cheap fix for me. You can check the Dollar Stores for Velcro and the bells are literally $1 or so at Walmart or any craft store.
Ignore my dirty door. I have 3 kids and a dog. I’m sure you can understand.

And how do you train your dog to use the bell? I love this idea. Don’t have a dog yet but sometime this year.
These work really well. i didn’t make mine from scratch, i purchased sleigh bells from the holiday clearance rack for very little. They came already on a rope to hang. We’ve always used bells on the door for the dogs. They learn really quickly how to ring the bell and then you don’t have all the scratch marks on the door.
