What exactly did I just sign up for?

by Lori on March 25, 2011

In my quest to get healthy and fit for myself and my family I have recently started the adventure of running.

Yes, I am attempting to become a runner. One of those people who can run incredibly long distances and make it look easy.

Yep.

That’s what I want to do.

How in the world do I plan to accomplish this?

Good question!

First off, I am getting up and I am getting out there. I am running. So far so good I guess. Some days I am proud of myself for running the small distance I ran. I mean, we all have to start somewhere right? Other days I am thinking ” What in the world am I doing? I suck at this!”

To push myself even further in this challenge, I have decided to make a commitment.

I am committed to running the San Antonio Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon on November 13, 2011 with my friend Shelley from Slightly Off Kilter. This run also benefits the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Foundation.

Yes. We are insane.

I am scared. I am excited. This is one of the biggest things I have ever tried to do in my life. Failure is not a option and that is the part that scares me the most. I can not fail at this. I wont.

So, my question for you guys is how can I make sure that I do not fail at this? What steps should I take to make sure I run this half marathon and I kick its ass? I will need your guidance and support to get this done.

Good for you for doing a Rock n’ Roll Half. I know you can do it. I don’t know if you signed up already. If you have not then keep an eye out for early registration at other events for a discount and a bonus prize. For my local Rock n’ Roll I signed up at earlier races for the discount and a nice t-shirt to wear months in advance of the event. My RnR Half is about a month before yours, I will definitely be watching your progress and will be rooting you on. It will be a blast! This is a very fun race series.

I completely feel for you! My New Year’s Resolution this year was to run a half marathon (it’s coming up in about three weeks-eek!) I’ve always been “sporty” but never been a real runner…so I know exactly how you feel! Some days a short run feels so hard and other days I feel like my goal should be a whole marathon (maybe someday). Keep up your hard work and it’ll pay off! I’m so excited for my race, but sooooooooo nervous!

the half marathon is a GREAT goal, but as you know it will take a lot of hard work, dedication, and BELIEVING in yourself! find a good training schedule and try to follow it as best you can (we all know life gets in the way sometimes). for my first half i followed a beginners training schedule by hal higdon http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm
i also suggest doing smaller races like 5k and 10k’s before the half so you have the feeling of racing.
good luck!!

You know my advice Lori – No excuses! No matter how crazy your week gets or how little sleep you get, you HAVE to get out there 3 days a week and get those runs in. If you do that and you slowly increasing the distance of your runs, there is no way you can fail. My only other piece of advice is to go nice and slow. When finishing is your goal, there is no need to kill yourself out there. You’re going to do great!

OMG! I’m so PROUD of you! Registering is a FANTASTIC way to get motivated and JUST DO IT! Here’s some training tips I wrote for Leah last year – the post is old, but the tips are still valid: http://fitnesscheerleader.com/lazy/10-things-to-keep-in-mind-when-training-for-a-half-marathon/ LikeI said on Twitter, you CAN do it!!

Map out different distances for you to run each week. When running longer distances, dont focus on the whole thing, pick out an object ahead of you and make it small goals and before you know it, your done! I ran the RnR San Antonio and it was awesome! Good luck! I know you can do it!

you are going to do awesome first word toward distance to make sure you can do that long a run then as it gets closer time yourself and see how fast your mile is this will help you with your personal record. ive done several 5k walks last year and its an accomplishment each time

Like you, I decided registering for a run was the way to get me going. I signed up for only a 5k since I’ve never rain further than a block (and only when I was in danger of missing the bus). As the race day approached, I got worried, I ran more at the gym and then managed to do it in far less time than I’d imagined. I’m gonna do a couple more 5k’s before venturing into half-marathon territory, but I’m sticking with it. I’ve somehow turned into a runner of sorts–I love the days I can go to the gym and just run for a while. :)

All the best!
