One of the hottest toys right now is the Hexbug. 

My kids LOVE these little guys! Even the 9 year old GIRL loves to play with the hexbug sets. This is the one toy that knows no Gender barrier. My dad even loved playing with the little bugs when they came to visit on Thanksgiving! He is a grown man and had a blast playing with these little guys with his grand kids!
